This is the first book in the series, “Solomon vs. Lord”.As with any new series, we readers must first be introduced to the principal characters, Steve Solomon and Victoria Lord. Both of whom exude one of the main characteristics I look for in a read, namely, Character Development.I don’t retell story lines in my reviews, but suffice it to say, Paul Levine has had a lot of fun developing this legal duo for not only this read, but I suspect, other books to come.Steve Solomon is a Miami, FL criminal defense attorney, whose practice is largely Pro Bono, which loosely translated means he is generally broke defending clients that have no money with which to pay for his services.Victoria Lord, on the other hand comes from a family that is well off financially. That these two meet, let alone, partner together is as much of the story line as the Plot itself.There is one other principal character, who becomes largely the “glue” that binds the two lawyers together. Steve has a 15 year old nephew named Bobby who is nothing short of being an autistic savant.To say the kid is talented in an otherwise autistic state is an understatement. There is just no way to abbreviate Bobby’s talent herein without reading the book. However, Steve is a doting uncle to his sister’s son and Victoria comes to love the boy as much as Steve.As with any of Levine’s books, and I have read several, this is a loosely concocted crime thriller involving the murder of a client’s husband. Victoria is a friend of the alleged wife-murderer and Steve is the hangers on, based on his skill in criminal defense work, which Victoria lacks. The base line of the defense, however, is that the deceased husband is famously wealthy, meaning if the defense can extricate the wife from the murder charge, Steve will gain half of a $250,000 fee.There is good Rising Action through out the story to keep the reader interested, i.e., no filler by the author who has run out of ideas as to where next to take the plot line. There is also good Falling Action which tapers off into the Resolution. I did not detect any real anti-climax, although, thought the way Levine takes us to the proverbial punchline was clever.The next book in the series, “The Deep Blue Alibi” will further flesh out the relationship twixt the two, who are now in a full time legal partnership.Should be interesting. This book is about how Solomon and Lord became partners in the defense of Katrina Barksdale who is accused of murdering her wealthy husband. Meanwhile Solomon has fallen in love with Victoria Lord and does not tell her, for she is engaged to a wealthy real estate man. Takes time for Victoria to see the very good side of Solomon in how he shows so much love to his nephew Bobby, who is Autistic and has a brain disorder. Solomon has filed for full guardianship for Bobby who is 11. This book is a great entertaining fun read; there is a part where Bobby is talking to a family court Judge and I was laughing out loud with tears at the things Bobby was telling the Judge for he can not tell a lie. Highly recommend this book.
